By now, I suspect that you’re getting the gist that earthy tones are ‘in’ this season. Imagine walking into a forest at this time of the year, looking at all the leaves, and there you have it, the colour palette of AW19. If you particularly like the autumnal tones then now is your time to invest!

This is probably a good segue for me to talk about one of my bugbears. I have talked to so many women over the years that have had their ‘colours’ done and as a result will never deviate from the particular palette that they have been told suits them. I don’t have a problem with the concept at all, I completely agree that certain colours suit different people better than others, but what I do have a problem with is never deviating from the chart. If you love something, wear it! Regardless of the colour. On the whole, if you love something, it’ll make you feel happy, you’ll wear it with joie de vivre and it will look great. It’s how you wear it, not what you wear afterall.

These trousers by Cos are a fantastic piece to invest in if you are looking for a versatile item that will update your current wardrobe. A wide leg trouser cut just above the ankle, is a key look for the moment. Don’t be fooled into thinking that this style will only suit tall, slim women. The key to this trend looking good on most body shapes and sizes is the exposed ankle. If you have a fuller figure then an exposed ankle under a wide leg is slimming and if you are short, just make sure that the hem hits above the ankle, if it does not, then I would suggest having them tailored (many dry cleaners will offer this service pretty inexpensively). If your biggest part is your tummy, then wear a jumper that sits on the hip and skims but does not cling to the body.

I love this bag. It is made from woven plastic (think French cafe seats) and is a good size for everyday use (it has a popper clasp). A statement bag with a simple outfit, that ties all the colours together, is such a cool look. Obviously most of us do not have the means to have a different bag for every outfit but ever so often, it’s worth it. If you generally dress quite simply then you’d actually be surprised how often you would wear a bag like this. It will transform the everyday into something more considered and stylish.

It’s true, lumberjack shirts/jackets (or ‘shackets’ as they have become known-awful!) are back. So if you thought that they were just reserved for Canadian tree fellers, you’d be wrong. This one is from M&S and I am so pleasantly surprised to see that they haven’t ruined a perfectly nice jacket by sticking a heart on the lapel, or adding patches at the elbow or ‘jazzy’ coloured buttons. They’ve kept it simple and it is all the better for it. I have noticed that M&S are getting better at this; doing simple well and keeping it at that.
