Oversized
Oversized dressing is probably more of an acquired taste than wearing more fitted clothes. It is arguably not the most flattering way to dress in the traditional sense of what is considered to be flattering, but it is a style that I love and will always gravitate to. I think that there might be a misconception that you can only wear an oversized look if you’re tall and willowy. I completely disagree, this is a style that looks great on all body shapes, it’s just one that has to be embraced with confidence. The key, is buying well made and well tailored pieces.
Both mum and I are wearing the same trousers by Kin at John Lewis. One thing that I would say is that there is a fine line between looking like you’ve intentionally chosen an oversized style and looking like you’re drowning in your clothes. The key is to have one point at which your outfit tapers and for me, a tapered trouser leg that reveals an ankle is it. If you’re wearing boots then make sure that they are fitted around the ankle. Otherwise a sock with brogues would look great, and no socks and plimsoles would look lovely as the weather warms up.
These trousers are made from a thick, good quality corduroy and they are high waisted with a pleated front.
Mum and I absolutely love an oversized white shirt. To me, a crisp white shirt poking out of an A-line jumper is such a chic look and is so easy and comfortable to wear. Of course, if you were keen for a more paired back look, skinny jeans would also look great. Try some high-top Converse trainers under the skinny jeans for a contemporary edge.
Now let’s talk about neck ties. They are a THING for next season. The designers have just shown their collections for next winter and the preppy, 70s look is back with a vengeance - which includes a great silk neck tie. If, like mum, you are keen to cover your neck then this is a great turn of events, both from a practical as well as an aesthetic one!
I love this blue and white striped shirt. Stripes are my weakness anyway, then combined with an oversized cotton shirt and I am sold! This would be an incredibly versatile piece in your wardrobe as not only does it look great under a jumper or of course, worn on it’s own but it would look fab over your swimwear on the beach. Shirts are my favourite cover-up.
I find that either a blue and white or a grey and white striped shirt acts as a ‘neutral’ in terms of what other colours it will go with. It is why they are such a good investment.
Both mum and I are wearing Kin by John Lewis. The label is predicated along a Scandinavian aesthetic which is probably why we love it. It is a collection made up of simple pieces with a modern edge that can be built upon into an everyday capsule wardrobe. They are also clothes that should stand the test of time, both from a quality and style perspective.
