updating the Breton
Today, I want to show how by adding a few extra pieces to your outfit, you make what would otherwise be a very simple ensemble, into something much more pulled together. I’m sure that many of you have worn a Breton top and jeans, infact, if you’re like mum and me, then it’s probably a go-to staple. So how do we take a very simple look and elevate it?
Put some consideration into the Breton top that you choose. Rather than fitted, with a boat neck and 3/4 length sleeves (no disrespect mind you, I own a few), choose one like this; it has an exaggerated collar, zip front, boxy in fit with slightly flared arms. In shape, it reminds me a lot of a traditional rugby shirt.
I mentioned last week that base layers can be a great way of adding interest; here is a case in point. This pop of sky blue adds an accent of colour (and warmth!) and the complimentary scarf pulls together everything into something a bit more chic. Choose a more modern cut for your jeans and then add a Birkenstock clog for Gen Z approval and you have made it out of ‘mum uniform’ into something just as comfortable but much cooler.
And for the final pièce de résistance? A denim workwear jacket.
However, another option is to do what I have done - layer your stripy top with an over-sized shirt and t-shirt plus a great pair of trainers. Just as comfy, just as cool. On that point, don’t be mistaken into believing that lifestyle trainers (Nike, Adidas, New Balance etc) are the reserve of the 20 somethings, they are absolutely not. Trainers are a brilliant way of keeping your look youthful. There are SO many amazing pairs out there - have fun with it. In fact, an outfit like this would lend itself to a colourful pair - these for example…. or play it safer with these….either way, have fun!
