Well this feels autumnal. Berry red, burgundy, oatmeal, chestnut and chocolate brown, all the colours that we are beginning to see outside. They are colours that exist in nature together and, unsurprisingly, layer into an outfit beautifully too. Mum is wearing the sell-out Emile cardigan in burgundy by Sèzane (in a small, and she is a size 10). Sèzane are so clever at creating knitwear that elevates a look into something a bit more special. Many of you have asked me about neck ties too and where to buy them - Sèzane is a great place to have a gander. They seem to expand their offering every season. The French are very good at dressing in an elegant, but very simple way. A great neck scarf fits this bill. Having a variety of colours in your wardrobe is an easy, yet chic, way of pulling the colours of a simple outfit together. Just tie, and go!

These jeans are a great find if you’re looking for a ‘smarter’ pair - not faded - with a slim tapered leg and a waistline cut more like a chino than a traditional pair of jeans. We have rolled the hem here as it sat better with the high top trainers but full length with a boot or loafer would look great. Never be afraid to fiddle with the style of a garment - just because the brand has presented the item to you in a certain way, does not mean that you can’t change it to suit you better.

Penelope Chilvers must be up there with the shoe brands making the most comfortable shoes. These high top trainers are made from velvet which definitely elevates them into something more smart than a usual trainer. They call the colour ‘sand’ but I would be tempted to say that they are more of a mushroom. I think that the pink laces work well with what mum is wearing here but if I was to own these trainers, I would also buy neutral laces. Maybe something like these (but please do not hold me to them, I don’t have the shoes in front of me for reference - this is just from memory).

I love a bit of corduroy in winter and this pair from YMC are fab. They are the ‘market trousers’ which is a style that they seem to do every season. High waisted, with a pleat front and tapered leg, these trousers are a classic style that you could bring out year after year. They were loaned to us by the gorgeous family-run, Bristol based boutique Maze. The edit of brands that they put together is really fantastic and helps narrow down the inordinate amount of choice out there!

NB corduroy is a fabric that varies enormously in quality and you can’t always assume that the price indicates the quality. These YMC trousers are really lovely and would stand the test of time.

If you have one eye on the trends then you will know that Mary-Jane shoes are everywhere at the moment - as is the colour brown…..so combine the two et voila! A shoe of the moment. I absolutely love that this pair are patent too. I have worn them here with no socks as it was still warm outside but come winter, wear your pumps and Mary-janes with sparkly socks and tapered trousers. Something like these would do nicely.
