With the weather being so unpredictable here in the UK, layers are key and if there is one thing that I love, it’s layers! I’m sure that will come as no surprise to any of you. I was actually asked recently why I like layering so much and, having never thought about it before, decided that it’s because I love clothes so much - the more the merrier!
This jacket that mum is wearing is by Toast. Although it may not be obvious, it has a subtle checked pattern in the same colour as mum’s trousers. Often a subtle pattern on an otherwise plain coloured jacket can make it more versatile to wear - it becomes less of a harsh, block colour. Alternatively a quilted jacket like I am wearing is a versatile layer for cooler days. Again, it is essentially one colour but with decorative seams to add interest and break up the dark hue.
This ribbed, navy blue cardigan is another fantastic piece for the less clement of summer days. The capped sleeves lend an elegancy whilst the lack of long sleeves makes it a very good ‘throw on’ piece when there is a chill in the air but is not cold. It has a double zip which allows you to open it from the bottom, as well as from the top, making it more comfortable to wear with other layers underneath. I think that it would work very well over a summer dress.
I need to take a moment to mention this short sleeved, white linen shirt by COS. The quality to price is very good in my opinion. It’s also quite a stiff linen which I find difficult to come by. Floppy linen shirts obviously have their place but by virtue of their floppiness, they tend to look very causal. This COS one has a starched, sharpness to it, perfect for wearing with tailoring.
Another shout out to COS are these cream denim trousers. They’re weighty and thick so they hold their shape well and are therefore flattering. If you like this style of trouser, then I would highly recommend them. I can find white/cream jeans very unflattering if not made well but this pair tick all the boxes for a forgiving pale jean, aka not clingy and not see-through!
One last thing. If you love a Birkenstock sandal but are looking for something with a point of difference, then these are your shoes! Like all Penelope Chilver’s designs, they are extremely comfortable as well as being very pretty indeed. The cream embroidered flowers sewn over the brown suede is an effective detail that adds a touch of ‘femininity’ to an otherwise more utilitarian shoe. The elegant shape of mum’s tan loafers are a bit dreamy too!
