all the pretty colours

For the lovers of colour amongst you, this is set to be a good season. Pinks, blues, yellows, greens, you name it, the catwalks are awash with vibrant hues and the shops will be too. Surely no one can be immune to the happy inducing effects of that. This dress that I am wearing is a case in point.

It is beautifully made; an A-line shape constructed from generous layers of heavy cotton with scalloped trim. At £239 it is not cheap but should you be able to afford it, then this is a great investment as it is definitely a cut above what you would find in the cheaper high street shops.

The same can be said for the matching jacket. A beautiful jacket is a fantastic investment. It can elevate the simplest of outfits into something quite special. This particular one would look as great worn casually as it would with a dress for the evening or a wedding. If you were to wear a dress then you could pick out any of the colours from the fabric but I would be inclined to choose either pale blue or pale pink. The jacket is roomy in shape so go for your usual size, if not the size below (depending on how you like the fit).

For a more causal look, I would wear a white t-shirt or crisp shirt and dark blue jeans, with a pale blue cardigan either tied around your shoulders or worn underneath and fastened with one button. Mum has this cardi and it is gorgeous - such a vibrant colour, particularly with white.

This dress and jacket come from the gorgeous boutique Wild Swans. When I was visiting I met a lovely lady who had come in to buy her pregnant daughter a dress. Whilst she was there, she decided to try on a few bits herself. One of the pieces was a tie-dye floor length silk dress with spaghetti straps (this one for reference). She was happy to wear the dress in the evening on holiday, or to look particularly glamorous by the pool but was not sure that she would wear it anywhere else. Anyway, I suggested putting a fitted white t-shirt underneath, and voila, It looked fab. So don’t forget that a simple t-shirt (or fitted white shirt) is a great way of covering the upper arms (should you want to) and for feeling more comfortable during a normal day.

On to mum’s look. It makes me so happy when I see mum in an outfit that is so quintessentially ‘her’. When I work with new clients we will try on lots of different outfits - tops, skirts, trousers, dresses, all the combinations. Then suddenly BOOM, you hit upon the one look that sits most happily on that person and then we’re in the flow. To find someone’s style is to find the best parts of that person’s personality and to translate that into clothes. It’s the sartorial equivalent of putting your best foot forward. I truly believe that helping someone to find their rhythm in style can go a long way in helping them to find their rhythm in life. I know that that is a grand statement but I really do believe that clothes can hold that power. I’ve seen it happen.

So back to mum’s outfit. Well cut, high waisted trousers, a tucked in shirt (but cut in a modern way) and a complimentary coloured jumper over the shoulder’s. Simple, but effective. Mum tried on the jacket that I am wearing as we both love it but although it fitted well, it just didn’t look right. Mum suits understated, simple but chic, with a side of laid back cool (she’s going to kill me for writing that - the most modest person on the planet but it’s true). Im talking about this not because I think that you should know specifically about what does or doesn’t suit mum but because I want you to think about your own style and which items in your wardrobe make you feel most ‘you’. Think about why you like them and why you feel comfortable, then have these thoughts in your mind when you are dressing in the morning or when you are shopping.

I also wanted to let you know that I have added a gallery (below) of alternative jackets to the one that I am wearing…. I hope that it provides some inspiration!
