Same same, but different

Same same, but different

This week, the theme is in the title; same same, but different. Both mum and I are wearing the same jumper and trousers, but with a different coat and shoes. This idea takes us right back to the beginning of Graham St, the thought that nowadays women of all ages are wearing the same clothes, just styled slightly differently. Style through the ages has become fluid, it is an expression of who you are and not what age you are.

This cashmere jumper is from John Lewis and these cord trousers are from Cos. Corduroy came back with a vengeance last season and it’s here to stay for this Winter too. Mum and I both love cord so we may well feature more in the weeks to come….!

This coat is by Modern Rarity, a brand exclusive to John Lewis. The colours are beautiful and if you’re like mum and mainly wear neutral tones and blues, then it is a winner as it would tie so many outfits together. I should say here that I tried it on and although I loved it, it didn’t look anywhere near as good on me. As it is long and voluminous, it looks better if you are taller.

The colour of the jumper and quality is perfection. John Lewis are nailing it at the moment, they are doing exactly what Marks & Spencers should be doing. They have a selection of own-label cashmere jumpers in versatile colours at a good price - not acid green or canary yellow - but this oatmeal colour, navy, black, grey etc. ‘John Lewis & Partners’ is their main in-house label which offers a nicely curated range of wardrobe staples that are the trendy side of safe. Then there is ‘AND/OR’ which is predicated along similar lines but includes more stand out pieces, like beautiful printed dresses and blouses. Lastly ‘Kin’ (my personal favourite) which is Scandinavian in style - akin (sorry, couldn’t help it) to Cos. I find that the collections look SO much better in real life than they do online unfortunately. So I would always suggest going into store to have a look, rather than relying on the website.

If you want to be in vogue this Winter then wear a co-ord (co-ordinated two-piece in the same fabric) and if it’s in corduroy, all the better. With it’s boxy shape, cropped length and zip front, the jacket is channeling a 70s vibe and the trousers with their pleated front are on-point too. I have rolled them up which makes them much more ‘me’ versus mum’s full length. As always, I am sporting a statement sock!

The beauty of a co-ord like this one is that the jacket and trousers would look just as good worn separately with other items in your wardrobe as they do together. I would wear the trousers with an oversized shirt tucked in and the jacket with high-waisted jeans and a fitted polo neck. Or of course, the coat that my mother is wearing…..!
