Birds of a Feather

Birds of a Feather

The Uniqlo mac has made an appearance again.  We wanted to show how versatile a jacket like this is, particularly in olive green.  Anyone that has followed Graham St for a while will have heard me wax lyrical about both olive green and burgundy as colours that are as versatile as the usual navys, blacks and greys, but that are perhaps more interesting (and often more forgiving for the complexion).

Mum is wearing the barrel leg jeans from COS.  They have been producing this style for a while now and I have found it to be a flattering shape on most figures.  The style has a very subtle curve from the hip and then tapers to the ankle creating a lovely silhouette. For a pear shaped figure they skim the natural contours of your body and draw the eye to your smallest parts- waist and ankles. If your figure is straight up and down then this cut creates shape.  For an apple figure it also works well but what you might want to do is wear the jeans with a top (either a loose fitting t-shirt or a shirt) that sits on the hip bone, thus drawing the eye down over your widest part.

On another note, I saw a friend last week who was wearing the most fantastic little liner coat.  Apparently it is so warm but it wasn't bulky at all.  It fits neatly on the body with a gorgeous peterpan collar.  It is by a Cornwall based brand called Finisterre, early pioneers in sustainably and ethically made technical sportswear. The jacket is this one.  I thought that I would share this as, if you are like me and are often cold, it could be the answer!  Perfect for brisk spring days, or for wearing as another layer come winter.  It would actually have gone extremely well with the outfit that mum is wearing in this week's post. Instead, we went for this gilet by Zara - another excellent option for warmth during the shoulder months.

I have chosen a more unusual colour combination this week.  Unusual colour combinations are a great way of elevating a high-street outfit into something more interesting. I am wearing one of my trusty Cos/Arket fine wool turtleneck tops, brilliant for elongating the life of more ‘summery’ pieces in you wardrobe. This shirt is made from a very lightweight cotton so the turtleneck works perfectly - obviously a second layer won’t be necessary soon!

When putting an outfit of colour together, as a guideline I would pick two dominant colours - the blue and tobacco - then an accent of another colour (the cream jacket). This prevents the outfit from looking too ‘matchy-matchy’. As a rule you never want to have more than three distinct colours in an outfit. Mum’s look for example - I would consider her overall outfit to be ‘one’ colour (tones of cream and beige) and then we have added the blue socks and orange bag as ‘pops’ of colour. The ‘pops’ can be contrasting but they have to be complimentary. The necktie ‘anchors’ the orange and blue as it has both these colours in its pattern.

I hope that this makes sense?! Email me if you have any other questions….
